Sookmyung Women’s University’s Department of English Language and Literature was first established in 1948. Based on our deep-rooted history, Department of English Language and Literature was reborn as Independent School of English Language and Literature with TESL in 2010.
We aim to cultivate not only a comprehensive understanding of our major but also to develop English communication skills and critical/creative thinking skills. In order to achieve our goals, we offer a curriculum composed of English literature, translation, and TESL(English education) along with various fields of English language based on the latest theories. Under the guidance of the faculty who are outstanding scholars in the field, students in Department of English Language and Literature can deliberate on English literature, characteristics of language, interpreting and translation, current status and future of English education which in turn develop their insight into human and society.
Our history of nearly 100 years have produced graduates who possess English proficiency as well as international sense and have expanded into a variety of fields of society. They have extended the horizons of English literature by entering academia and are also actively engaging in diplomacy, journalism, publishing, trade, tourism, finance and other international institutions.
