• Evaluation Items ① ~ ⑧: Qualifications for Thesis/Dissertation Submission - All items from ① to ⑧ must be passed before the semester of evaluation.
Example: To submit a master's thesis by the 4th semester, qualifications such as completion of research ethics and thesis writing courses by the 3rd semester, passing the English exam, and comprehensive exams are required.

Q3. English Language Proficiency Test
• Eligibility : Current students, students on leave of absence, and research registrants are eligible. English exam pass or exemption approval is only required once before graduation.
• Test Subject : English
• Application Period: Within 2 days from the start of each semester
• Test Schedule : Conducted once per semester
• Application Fee Payment: Please refer to the announcements on the Graduate School website.
• Passing Criteria : Score of 60 or above (out of 100)
• Result Confirmation : Please check the result labeled "Pass"(합격) on the Sookmyung Portal. The department office will not provide separate notification of exemption or pass results so please check directly on the Sookmyung Portal.

• Eligibility for Application
- Individuals with excellent scores in certified English proficiency tests (Scores are not recognized if the validity period has expired as of the application date. For detailed criteria, please refer to the general Graduate School website).
- Individuals who have obtained a bachelor's degree or higher from a university in a country where English is the official language.
• How to Apply : Applicants must submit an exemption application form (면제신청서) to the general Graduate School Academic Affairs Team during the exemption application period (early March/early September).

② Please submit the form with supporting documents, such as certified English proficiency test score report (original) or graduation certificate from a foreign university.

Q4, Comprehensive Exam
• Eligibility : Eligible candidates as of the application date (including expected credits for the current semester)
- M.A. Program: Candidates with 18 earned credits
- Ph.D. Program: Candidates with 24 earned credits
- M.A.-Ph.D Integrated Program: Candidates with 42 earned credits
* Failure to meet the credit requirements by the end of the semester will result in disqualification.
* Open to enrolled students, students on leave of absence, and research registrants
Example 1: For master's candidates, if 9 credits (3 subjects) were completed in the first semester and 9 credits (3 subjects) are expected to be completed in the second semester, they are eligible for the comprehensive examination from the second semester since they are expected to complete 18 credits.
Example 2: For master's candidates, if 9 credits (3 subjects) were completed in the first semester and 6 credits (2 subjects) are expected to be completed in the second semester, making it a total of 15 credits expected, they cannot apply for the examination in the second semester. If 3 credits (1 subject) are expected to be completed in the third semester, they can apply for the examination from the third semester.
• How to Apply
① Pre-application: Please submit through the department office at the beginning of the semester (Pre-application form are sent via email).
② Formal Application: In addition to the pre-application for the comprehensive examination, formal application must be made through the Sookmyung Portal during the designated period for comprehensive examination in the academic calendar.
* If pre-application is completed but formal application is not made through the portal, the candidate cannot sit for the examination for that semester.
* The examination fee is NOT required.
• Examination Schedule : Conducted once per semester according to departmental regulations
* The department of ELL usually conducts the examination in early June or early December. Detailed schedules are sent to the candidates via emails.
* If a student is unable to take the exam according to the department's prescribed schedule, s/he will not be able to adjust the schedule or retake the exam.
• Department-Specific Comprehensive Examination Subjects
- M.A. Program: 3 subjects / Ph.D. Program: 4 subjects

* For TESOL Ph.D. students, a separate list of comprehensive examination subjects for each group are emailed.
• Passing Criteria : Minimum score of 70 out of 100 for each subject.
- Students can take multiple subjects separately.
- Partial pass for individual subjects is recognized.
- There is no limit to the number of times a student can retake failed subjects.
- All answers should be handwritten with a pen or pencil; no use of computers, dictionaries, etc.

* All comprehensive examinations must be passed before the semester of the thesis evaluation. In other words, comprehensive examinations and thesis evaluation cannot be conducted in the same semester.
Q5. (Ph.D. Program) Departmental Regulations regarding Pulication in Academic Journals
• Departmental Regulations :
Publication at least one paper as the lead author in nationwide academic journals recognized by organizations such as the National Research Foundation of Korea (including candidates) or international professional academic journals
(For translation majors, journals determined by professors in the relevant field in addition to those recognized by the NRF (candidates) and international journals are accepted.)
• Submission Process and Deadline : Please obtain prior approval from the advisor and dean at the beginning of June or December of the semester in which the paper evaluation is conducted. Then, submit the publication report and original paper through the department office. (Related information will be sent via email to the submission candidates in advance).
• Notes on Authorship : Only papers where the submission candidate is the lead author will be accepted, regardless of the number of co-authors. However, if there are co-authors, the following proportions will be recognized:
- If the candidate is the lead author: 100%
- If there are two authors: 70%
- If there are three authors: 50% or four or more authors: 30%
Q6. Supplementary Courses
Completion of supplementary subjects refers to the system where, if a student majored in other than English Language and Literature in the previous degree, s/he must additionally take English language and literature classes from the previous course in Sookmyung Women's University in addition to fulfilling the major subjects required for graduation.
• Credit Requirements
- Master's Program: Completion of Major Requirements (24 credits) + Bachelor's Program Supplemental Courses(9 credits)
- Doctoral Program: Completion of Major Requirements (36 credits) + Master's Program Supplemental Subjects (12 credits)
* The selection of the supplementary course list is conducted according to departmental regulations.
* If additional supplementary subjects are selected, up to a total of 12 credits can be taken, including major subjects.
Example: Major 3 credits + Supplemental 9 credits / Major 6 credits + Supplementary 6 credits / Major 9 credits + Supplemental 3 credits, etc. (It is not possible to register for 12 credits with major subjects alone.)

Q7. Assigning Advisor
• The official period for the assignment of advisors, as determined by the university, is the second semester for master's students and the first semester for doctoral students. During this period, students respond to emails received from the department office.
• However, this process is to inform the department office of the confirmed advisor.Since the process is soon after the start of semester, it is recommended to personally contact the professor before the second semester for master's students and the first semester for doctoral students.

Q8. Thesis/Dissertation Evaluation
★ Please consult with your advisor at each stage below.
① Submission of Research Proposal
When the submission period for the research proposal arrives in the 3rd semester for M.A. students and the 1st semester for Ph.D. students, it should be directly completed on the Sookmyung portal.
② Preliminary Evaluation of Thesis (Proposal)
• Once qualified for thesis evaluation by passing the English and comprehensive exams, preliminary evaluations (presentation of the thesis plan) are conducted during the Winter/Summer Graduate Symposium. Preliminary evaluations are conducted exclusively during the Graduate Symposium.

③ Thesis Evalution Application / Evaluation Fee Payment : Please refer to the Graduate School website for the schedule and complete the applicaiton and payment.
④ Final Thesis Evaluation (Defense)
• After passing the preliminary evaluation, the thesis evaluation (late May to early June/late November to early December) takes place.
• The detailed evaluation schedule are informed by the department. Once decided by the department, adjustments due to personal schedules are strictly prohibited. Therefore, if a student have unavoidable personal commitments during the evaluation period, it is advisable to consult with her/his advisor in advance.
• M.A. Program: Advisor, Chair of the Committee, and a committee member (overall three professors)
• Ph.D. Program: Advisor, Chair of the Committee, and three committee members (overall five professors)
• One week before the evaluation, the completed and bound thesis (ring binding) must be prepared and directly delivered to the committee.
• One copy of the plagiarism report must be prepared and brought by the student.
⑤ After Passing the Final Evaluation
• Upon passing the final evaluation, before the university's final submission deadline, discuss revisions and obtain endorsements with your advisor.
• The endorsement must include handwritten signatures from all committee members. The student should directly contact the professors for their signatures.
• Regarding the detailed schedule and procedure for final submission, emails are sent to the relevant individuals each time.
⑥ Cancellation of Thesis Evaluation Before Final Evaluation
• If you decide to cancel the evaluation after the evaluation schedule is set, please contact your advisor or the department office. Random cancellation without notice may cause significant disruption to the subsequent procedures, so your cooperation is essential.
• Cancellation during the refund period iseligible for a refund: please submit the Thesis Submission Cancellation Form (논문제출신청포기원, available in the Graduate School website's document forms) to the Graduate School Academic Affairs Team.
• Cancellation after the refund period is not eligible for a refund.
Q9. Sookmyung English Graduate Symposium
The Sookmyung English Graduate Symposium is an event for students, including current students, incoming students, and graduates in the deparment of ELL. The symposium includes preliminary evaluations of thesis/dissertation for each specific major and presentations of recommended papers from various classes.
• Schedule : Every third Saturday of February/August (Specific schedules may vary).
• Attendance is mandatory for those planning to undergo preliminary evaluations. In other words, if you intend to undergo paper evaluations in the summer semester of the 2024 academic year, you must participate in the Summer Symposium in August 2024 and present your preliminary evaluation.
• The Graduate Sympisium is managed by the academic directors of each specific major. Please respond to the email sent by the academic director during each vacation period to apply for attendance.
Q10. Dipolma and Graduation Ceremony
• Mail is sent out to eligible candidates for degree certificate reception every semester. Typically, recipients are required to visit the Graduate School Academic Affairs Team or the department office to receive the diploma within the specified period. (Proxy reception or postal reception is not available).
• For information regarding the degree conferral ceremony schedule and gown rental, please inquire at the Graduate School Academic Affairs Team.
